Many thanks to the St. Mark's parishioners who are now participating in the thriving Thumbs Up after-school tutoring program at Port Royal Elementary School. Here's another "passion" opportunity for those who want to help younger kids: First Books of Beaufort provides books, and volunteers to read them to Title I and Head Start schools in the Beaufort/Port Royal area. Once a month, readers spend a half hour sharing stories, letters and numbers with bright-eyed four year olds. Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
A Journey of Faith
January 30 – February 8, 2018
Join the Rev. Roy and members of St. Mark’s as we embark on a journey of faith. Many people refer to the Holy Land as a 5th Gospel – a place where the people, places and events of the scriptures come to life.
We travel during a time of the year when crowds are thinner and access to sites much richer. Our pilgrimage includes a thoughtful journey to historical and religious sites, upscale 4-star hotels offering warm hospitality and delicious Mediterranean cuisine, and opportunities to meet with local Palestinian Christians to learn more about their lives, hopes and challenges.
Time for daily prayer and reflection, as well as a service of Holy Eucharist, will be included. The pilgrimage is open to parishioners and members of the Diocese and their friends. Come join us! The cost is $3700, complete with airfare from Charleston, SC. A portion of each booking will go to support the ministries at St. Mark’s.
For more information, visit: www.travelillume.com/trc/qhw or call 800-368-6757, extension 128. Registration is due August 4th (accepted after August 4th on a space-available basis).
WELCOME, ROY TRIPP AND LIZ DEVOIR
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Port Royal has called the Rev. Roy Tripp to be its first full-time rector.
Tripp has over 20 years experience in parish ministry--all within the Episcopal Church. He is a native of Maine, and after a career in marketing, sales and public relations, entered seminary and was ordained in 1996. He has served parishes in Washington State, Delaware and Massachusetts.
“For me, parish ministry is where faith and life intersect,” Tripp said. “I find great joy in walking with people as they discover God’s presence in their lives. I’m excited to be at St. Mark’s, the first new parish in The Episcopal Church in SC,” he said.
The Episcopal Church in SC is the continuing diocese of the national Episcopal Church (TEC), which in turn is a member of the world-wide Anglican Communion. It consists of the 46 parishes, missions and worship groups in eastern SC that remained with TEC after a number of parishes broke away in 2012. Its Provisional Bishop is the Rt. Rev. Gladstone B. “Skip” Adams III.
About his vision for St. Mark’s, Tripp said, “It will not be so much my vision, but our vision as we discover where God’s Spirit will lead us. And we invite all to join with us as we continue to discover and share God’s love in our lives and in our world.”
“I want to spend time getting to meet many people in the Port Royal and Beaufort area, continuing and deepening the ties between St. Mark’s and the community,” he said.
“St. Mark’s has developed a reputation for being a welcoming parish that is deeply committed to mission and outreach. We have many programs and projects that make a difference in the lives of so many people--locally, regionally and even internationally. It is exciting to be called to such a vibrant group of people joyfully living their faith,” he said.
Tripp is married to Liz Devoir and they have a grown son, Preston.
Begun as a house church in 2003, St. Mark’s began worshipping in historic Union Church in Port Royal in 2009. The congregation attained mission status with the Episcopal Church in SC in 2013 and was made a parish in 2015. The church holds services in Union Church on Sundays at 9 and 11 a.m. and a Wednesday service in St. Mark’s Center, 1110 Paris Ave., Port Royal, at 11 a.m.
